Season of Passings

Got a call from my brother this morning and later a message from my sister. Both telling me that our childhood neighbour had passed away last night.

She has been my neighbour for 12 years next to the house that I grew up in. We called her “auntie” all these years but her name is Yap Ah Foong. Her husband, who treated my brother like a godson, died of lung cancer (beware smokers) more than 10 years ago. She was fortunate to have 7 grandchildren to accompany her after she lost her husband.

Auntie worked hard for her whole life. She came from a poor family but worked hard to support her brother’s education. Her brother now is the marketing director of a mainstream Chinese newspaper. Something she is really proud of. She also touched all the lives in our family as she was treating me and my siblings like her grandchildren, and my parents as great friends. There were so much sweet memories in her house.

RIP Auntie…
