Bring Your Own Bag drive in Singapore
The first Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) drive in Singapore will be launched tomorrow by the National Environmental Agency.
Shoppers are being asked to bring their own bags to supermarkets once a month to cut down the use of plastic bags, the agency said yesterday.
Nearly 200 shops and seven supermarket chains are taking part.
Singapore uses 2.5billion plasctic bags a year, equivalent to 625 bags a person.

we can do that also. next time got to shop, say: tak mau plastic.
The problem is the aunties will say “Gimme two more plastic can ar?”
So it is good that the shop say “Sorry we don give plastic today.”
Alternative way, we can opt to carry a bigger hand/school bag along, to stuff whatever things in.
“tak mau plastic” is wat i always do. i think wat singapore do is VERY GOOD. everytime saw a lot of plastic at home, dont know for wat use.
jinz, not safe too… got to beaware of snatch thieve…

Ikea not charging for plastic bags
PETALING JAYA: Ikea Malaysia is not charging customers for plastic bags issued by the store, unlike its Singaporean counterpart. “There hasn’t been any discussion to do the same here,” said Ikea Malaysia marketing manager Yap Poh Choo yesterday when commenting on a Singapore Straits Times report that Ikea there had started charging customers for bags to reduce waste.
(I think Ikea Malaysia should have done it, as it is a good practise… we got to start doing it somehow and somewhere. Taiwaneses have been doing it for the pass few years, most importantly they have a far more effective waste management system.)
