Multiplexity

I am shamelessly summarizing a Wikipedia page here…

Multiplexing (short muxing) is a term used to refer to a process where multiple analog message signals or digital data streams are combined into one signal. There are many methods or ways to mux digital or analog signal. Read here if you wish to know all about it. Anyway, a device that performs the multiplexing is called a multiplexer (MUX). So if you have a digital camera that records video in MPEG1 or MPEG2 format, the chances of you getting muxed video files are almost certain.

In a muxed MPG file, the audio and video streams are combined into one. So you need a device that performs the reverse process is called a demultiplexer (DEMUX). Unfortunately, the demuxing process will produce two files, one video and one audio. When you want to edit a muxed footage, you will have to go through more steps in order to import the footage into the video editing suite of your choice. The editing software that I know cannot import both sound and video of a muxed footage at the same time. I will just get video without sound. So, I need to use a demuxing software called ffmpeg.

So we had a Web Video Delivery Workshop on 21 & 22 June. And I think it was Ili who gave me a bunch of footage with self introductions of participants. Guess what? All of them are muxed MPG files… It just takes up too much of my time to demux and put the video and audio in sync again. So I used the soundless footage to create a completely fictional clip. My dearest participants of the workshop, please don’t kill me. Hehehe.
